Savage ~ Marguerite

“I know you’re awake.”

Draco turned his head towards the voice and cracked one eye open. His tentative calm threatened to desert him. “Get out.” He shut his eyes again and focused on his breathing.

“I can’t do that, I’m afraid. I’m your only friend at the moment, Malfoy.”

“Get out.” The tranquiliser must have been potent. He felt his temper climb, clawing its way to the surface but the result was muted. A low growl of a caged animal, rumbling a futile warning, echoed in the small room. Of all people for them to send him, why Potter?

Creaturefics are a hard sell on me but this was excellent. And so hot I can’t even- like seriously, I don’t know whether I just have a wolf kinK (*wink* I’m looking at you Harry) but this was sexy as fuck. Maybe it’s exciting because ordinarily, I find it difficult to visualise Draco as being physically dominant. I don’t mean sexually AT ALL, just with his physique, I imagine Harry as the stronger more athletic one. I do see Draco as more authoritative in bed, defiantly more comfortable with his sexuality/very much in control of his body, aware of the power he commands - but still Harry as the more aggressive, brutish and possibly the freer participant? ~ so when I read a fic in which Draco is super dominant I don’t usually buy it.

But here, everything is out the window. This isn’t a typical Draco. It isn’t even a typical Draco within the confines of this fics narrative. But it completely works for me. I’ve also said I don’t like Harry corrupted, but he is so willing and compliant - ugh it’s delicious. Draco is normally the definition of uptight, but here he is on edge, ravenous, possesses sort of irresistible danger and allure. The image of him “running it off” all sweaty and unhinged ~ (also when he asks to — on —, and Harry invites him, dsdfadlf;)

There were so many details I loved - George Weasely’s unorthodox role, Teddy (who I’m not usually crazy about) employed effectively/emotively, a great source of motivation (and possibly a complex one?) the politics, the jumper/marking, Draco’s sort of “claim” over Harry (again I usually hate possessiveness but it’s subtle and almost sweetly involuntary). The pacing/length was perfect and I absolutely loved that there were no grand declorations, but it was hopeful all the same.

Ha, I love furious, “don’t break my shit” Harry. It was also masterful how despite Draco’s domineering nature, Harry never lost his innate authority as a whole. His character was never really compromised — this is important to me and another reason why I tend not to enjoy “Power” Draco fics.

We Are Young (I’ll Carry You Home Tonight) ~ Femme

“More or less.” Draco stands up, reaching for a gulab jamun on top of my takeaway. He bites into it. “Kingsley wants to meet with you at Party headquarters Thursday. Half three. Be there or he’ll be annoyed. We’ve three weeks to the polls. That’s not much time.” He walks to the door, still chewing. “Oh, and Harry?”

“What?”

Draco opens the door. “Because I know you’re dying to ask…if there were a competition between you and Sus as to who gave the best blow job—”

I restrain myself from throwing an inkwell at his smirking face. “Fuck off, Malfoy.” He knows I hate it when he compares me to his exes. It never seems to stop him though. Fucking bastard.

“You’d win. You always do.”

Draco finishes the gulab jamun and wipes a thumb at the corners of his mouth. I don’t bother to tell him he’s missed a few dark crumbs.

I’ve been meaning to rec this ever since I started this blog, but couldn’t quite find a way to adequately put to words the depth of my love for this fic. Judging the past correlation between my enjoyment of a fic and the length of my review/flail, this may be a long one. Also I’m going to attempt not to spoil too much, as this had some great twists and surprises and it would totally mess with my karmic balance to ruin them.

Lets start with the fact this is another Femme original, so anytime she writes h/d it will be unarguably FLAWLESS. Praising the quality of her writing is like sighting the fact Monet was good at painting lily pads and expecting people to be impressed with your observational skills. It is a given and me complimenting the joyous nature of her words yet again, is waste of adjectives. I am going to say this is possibly my favourite of her works and prattle on about all the things in it I loved. Firstly, Harry’s POV. Draco’s is always fun and spunky (with a side of tragic), but I loved her Harry’s mix of practicality/preservation and risk taking. He is righteous but rebellious. I love their on-off relationship. Many authors highlight the fact that h/d are perfect for each other, but most don’t play with that idea when the relationship is in the open and the problem is commitment, not what the world will think. One of my favourite aspects of this fic was that all their friends already knew and were willing them (under a few guises) to make it real. Lucius is also fabulous in this. I loved that he is reformed, but still maintained his edge and vindictive streak. There is nothing I hate more that a soft and broken Lucius. He was alway good at playing the power-game and I honesty don’t think he’d regress into the shadows for long. I’m also a huge ‘The Thick of it’ fan so the politics and jargon was the opposite of a turn-off. Blaise as a Malcolm - Man of Spin incarnate was a stroke of devilish genius. And I always smile when our british love of the fruity phrase and naughty word is exploited.

Just going to run through some highlights; The opening scene in its picturesque quality, Aisha, MIMSY – I swear she is my favourite character after h/d, Hermione being an astute, patient and brilliant friend and also a fun drunk! Harry’s reasons for leaving the Auror force/going into politics - its reveal and fleshed-outness, the Harry/Ron disillusionment/disagreement, the betting pool, Draco’s hatred of Beatrice, Goyle’s career and Draco’s presumption, also his diva/sassy ways, h/d’s banter and flirtation (and slight kinkiness), the scene when they’re watching TV (still makes me giddy), the SCENE at the office/hallway floor (makes me more giddy), Harry’s realisation/on the sofa faze, Draco’s philosophy on fucking and his bi-ness, ON THE BALCONY. And so much more.

Rich in plot. Epic in length. Heavy on emotional weight and investment. A plethora of details and memorable moments. God, this reads like a film in it’s visuals and completeness. Just go and READ THIS, it will probably enrich your life.

Black Coffee on a Lonely Night ~ Femme

“George, darling,” Angelina says, “will you let this breathe?”

George takes the bottle from her. “Nice, but then your sort always are good at choosing wine, aren’t you?”

Angelina slaps his arm. “George!”

Her fiancé winces and glares at her. “What the hell—” He looks back over at me and Potter, and his eyes widen. “Oh, no, I didn’t meant bent. That’s ridiculous. Harry’s shite at picking a decent bottle, and he’s as homosexual as they come, unless you count that one fling with Ginny. I meant what with you being a toff and all. You know wine.”

I bite my lip, trying not to laugh at the horror on Potter’s face. “Yes,” I say after a moment. “I do know wine.”

I’m pretty sure this is the one of the only non-magical AU I’ll be reccing. That’s simply because I always feel like; is it really h/d if they never went to Hogwarts? But then this is Femme so that makes all else irrelevant. I die for an overly British fic (can you be an anglophile if you are actually English?), and you really can’t get much more British than a Daily Mail Sex Scandal Exposé, on a backdrop of Whitehall, featuring a Oxford-graduate LibDem MP and an Cambridge graduate Ex-England Cricket Batsman. Just throw in some tea and crumpets and be done with it! Ordinarily one of my favourite aspects of h/d is their cumulative shit-load of emotional baggage and trauma, and how they manage to work through their past to create some semblance of a relationship- and although I would never wish for them to lose that element, its oddly cleansing to remove the turbulent shared experience of their youth and have the proverbial slate wiped clean.
